DIY Modern Wall Hooks

If you're looking for a cheap and easy way to update your hook game, these modern wall hooks are the way to go! The process is so simple, and you only need a few tools to do it so it's easier for beginner DIYers to work on.

Tool List

Drill

Drill bit that's the same size as your dowel screws

Miter Saw

Pliers

If you don't own these tools, check your local hardware store for rentals or even a tool library to check them out. We love going to the tool library for tools we are only going to use for specific projects and don't want to purchase.

Supply List

Dowel (you can choose what size works best for you)

Dowel screws

Stain or paint

Clear sealer

Sandpaper

Step 1: Cut Dowel

Choose what dowel length you want as everyone has different preferences (I cut mine to 2 1/4 inches on the long edge).

Use the miter saw to cut the angled edge (I cut mine at 22.5 degrees for the wall side). You can choose if you want both edges angled, both straight, or one straight and one angled.

Step 2: Pre-drill holes

Use a drill bit that's the same size as your dowel screw to pre-drill a hole. Make sure if you have an angled wall edge that you're pre-drilling at a 90 degree angle to allow the hook to screw in straight without running into the wall.

Step 3: Insert dowel screws

Use pliers to grip the dowel screw and screw into the pre-drilled hole.

Step 4: Finish hooks

Sand down all edges and rough spots to prep for your finish. It's up to you how you want to finish these, you can use stain, paint, or a clear coat. If you use stain, make sure you use a clear coat on top to give it a smoother finish.

Step 5: Install hooks

If you have a wood wall like us, you will pre-drill holes with the same bit and screw the hook in. If you have drywall (most likely you do), you will need to use drywall anchors to give enough support for the hooks.

That's it!
