Weekend Reno: Fairhaven Country Cottage

Updated: May 28, 2020

Wow, what a weekend this was! Weekend is a generous term, as we really worked almost 5 full days on this project, but let's just roll with it. This was a really special project for me because it was the last place I lived before getting married, it was the home I shared with my grandma for 6 months as roommates, and now that she's passed, it's now the new, fresh space we will stay in when we visit my parents in Virginia. We updated the cottage with my grandma in our minds and hearts throughout the process, and while I think she would have liked most of the changes, she definitely would have told us if she didn't! She was a feisty one :)

Knowing our time frame, budget, and goals, we chose to update the things that were manageable without major renovation or long timelines. Here's the list we wanted to accomplish over the weekend:

  • Update all light fixtures and add wireless switches where there were pull chains

  • Add new flooring in the living room and kitchen

  • Paint the kitchen countertops to resemble marble

  • Install peel and stick wallpaper in the kitchen as an accent wall

  • Paint kitchen, closet, bathroom, and trim

  • Install ceiling fan in bedroom

  • Install barn door in bedroom to provide privacy

  • Replace all outlets and light switches

  • Install door threshold

  • Install shower fixture to replace the broken one

  • Update bathroom fixtures

  • Install new doorknobs and deadbolt in front door

SPOILER ALERT: we got it all done before our flight back home, except for minor paint touchups and some small final to do list items.

I'll break it down room by room in future posts and link to all of the products we used, but for now you can just enjoy all the beautiful after photos!
